$43,860 - $53,676, based upon qualifications

The University of California, Berkeley is seeking a librarian who is innovative, technically skilled and service oriented, with a background in the life sciences. This person is a member of the Bioscience Library Information Services staff and participates in the provision of reference services to the broad UC Berkeley Bioscience and Natural Resources community and in teaching through course-related and drop-in research instruction classes. Reference service and instruction are also offered through emerging technologies.

The Environment
The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at one of the nation’s premiere public universities. In a highly-diverse and intellectually-rich environment, Berkeley serves a campus community of 23,000 undergraduate students, 9,000 graduate students, and 1,500 faculty. The Library is comprised of 20 libraries, including the Doe/Moffitt Libraries, The Bancroft Library, and the East Asian Library collectively offering extensive collections in all formats and robust services to connect users with those collections and build their related research skills. The Library has a collection of more than 10 million volumes and a collections budget of over $17 million. The Library has a current operations budget of over $48 million with nearly 375 FTE employees and more than 600 part-time student employees. The Library is a member of the Center for Research Libraries (CRL), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), and the Research Libraries Group (RLG), and is an active participant in the California Digital Library (CDL). The Marian Koshland Bioscience and Natural Resources Library at the University of California, Berkeley provides active information support for the research and instructional programs for the departments of Molecular and Cellular Biology, and Integrative Biology in the College of Letters and Sciences, and the College of Natural Resources. This primary user group includes approximately 270 faculty, 700 graduate students and 3,320 undergraduate majors. Additionally, the Bioscience and Natural Resources Library supports the life sciences and natural resources needs for other related disciplines on campus as well as for the general public. The heavily used collection includes 559,000 volumes and over 6500 serial subscriptions in an attractive facility. The website (http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/BIOS) is a gateway to a rich collection of networked resources including major bioscience/natural resources databases and a substantial array of electronic journals. The staff consists of 4 librarians, 9 paraprofessionals and student assistants.


Responsibilities:
Develops and adapts technologically innovative services to meet the information needs of the campus life sciences research community. In coordination with the Head Librarian and the Head, Information Services, the Emerging Technologies Librarian is responsible for developing a program of web-based bibliographic instruction for the biological and natural resources. Coordinates the development and maintenance of the Bioscience and Natural Resources Library Web site. Trains library staff in innovative uses of software. Administers Macintosh Computer classroom, including investigation of MacIntosh software products.

This librarian will share responsibilities for scheduled reference desk service, as well as electronic reference, providing general and specialized reference in biology and natural resources. Develops web-based instruction through self-instructional techniques such as web-based tutorials and handouts, and participates in classroom instruction (course-related and on specialized electronic resources). UCB librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, to be able to work comfortably in a shared decision-making environment, and to be active professionally.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

- Accredited graduate degree in librarianship/information studies; or equivalent combination of education and 3 years of recent research library experience.
- Experience with web-page design using web development and, graphics tools and scripting languages, such as XML, XSLT, CSS, Dreamweaver, Flash and Photoshop.
- Demonstrated skills in creation of Web documents, including ability to write concisely and effectively for the web.
- Demonstrated aptitude for teaching and developing user-oriented documentation.
- Experience providing reference services with relevant life sciences reference material.
- Demonstrated initiative and flexibility, and ability to work both independently as well as collaboratively; excellent interpersonal, communications, organizational and analytic skills.


Desired:

- Academic background in biological sciences/natural resources.
- Fully functional skills in XHTML, CSS, Javascript, and knowledge of Windows and OS X operating systems.
- Working knowledge of applications running on Macintoshes to be able to install, configure and troubleshoot workstation problems.
- Demonstrated implementation of the concepts and goals of information literacy.
- Experience with integrating new and emerging technologies into the delivery of information service.
- Knowledge of instructional design principles in an online environment.
