This External position is for UCD/UCDHS employees and the general public. Applications from the general public and UCD/UCDHS employees will be considered simultaneously.
The General Library consists of the Peter J. Shields Library, the Carlson Health Sciences Library and the Physical Sciences & Engineering Library in Davis, and the Medical Center Library in Sacramento. For more information about the General Library see http://www.lib.ucdavis.edu.

Responsibilities
Serve as a front line member of the Web Services Team, which is responsible for coding and maintenance of all library web pages. Evaluate web development requests and implement them in a consistent manner within the guidelines developed and agreed upon by WST. Emphasis is placed on secure, open, and accessible solutions generally implemented upon LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP). Assists internal Systems Department projects by coding, debugging, and testing programs, and updates existing programs to support software and hardware upgrades.

Requirements
Reliable attention to detail with consistent follow through on long, involved projects. Effective time management skills to establish and adhere to schedules while balancing multiple priorities. Demonstrated ability to follow oral or written instructions accurately and provide periodic status reports to supervisor. Ability to apply systems analysis and diagnostic concepts to analyze problems, then develop and evaluate potential solutions individually and as a member of a team. Experience using HTML, XML, XSL, CSS, RSS, and other data encoding formats. Demonstrated knowledge of web security pitfalls and secure coding techniques (e.g. XSS, SQL Injection). Knowledge and experience with procedural and object oriented programming in languages including at least; JavaScript, Perl, PHP, and Unix Shells. Java, C, Python a plus. Demonstrated experience in using advanced web development concepts to create, maintain, and design entire websites. Familiar with current web development standards for accessibility (e.g. Section 508, W3C WAI). Demonstrated experience with web development for maximum cross platform compatibility. Working knowledge and experience with relational databases (e.g. MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL) and query languages and midleware (e.g. SQL, Perl DBI, PHP DB). SQL required. Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with MS Windows and UNIX-like operating systems. Skills working in a unix-based environment using utilities such as; awk, bash, chmod, CVS, make, sed, tar, vi. Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with various digital image formats and applicable uses. Familiar with basic Apache web server configuration options. (e.g. Modules, redirects, aliases, virtual hosts) Ability to communicate and interpret technical information to non-technical staff, and to resolve problems or train users in new procedures and routines. Strong writing skills to create and maintain system and program documentation.

Work in a non-smoking environment, must be able to adjust schedule to meet emergency need and other duties as assigned by management.

Physical Requirements
This position requires operating and moving of computers and their peripheral equipment. Communicating in person and by telephone or email, reading computer printouts and CRT screens. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and handle laden carts. Operate keyboard equipment, read fine print, CRT screen and computer printouts.

Sacramento Superior Court Law Librarian

WHAT: The Sacramento County Public Law Library is seeking an experienced librarian to become a full-time member of the Law Library's support services team. The Court law librarian reports directly to the assistant director for support services. The Court law librarian’s work space is located in the Sacramento Superior Court’s Main Courthouse.

WHERE: The Sacramento Superior Court has five locations in Sacramento County. The main courthouse is located in downtown Sacramento at 720 Ninth Street. The Sacramento Superior Court has over 65 judicial officers. For more information regarding the Sacramento Superior Court visit www.saccourt.com.

HOURS: Monday – Friday 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Must be flexible with hours. There may be some weekend hours from time to time.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Ability to competently perform a full-range of law library duties; learn and use an integrated online library system; prepare clear, concise directions for law library work routines; understand and follow oral and written directions; perform routine serials check-in, ordering, pocket parting and loose leaf updating; transport books and boxes of books weighing up to 50 lbs; effectively communicate in English both written and verbally; and establish and maintain effective working relationships.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • As a member of the support services team, develops, implements, and maintains library services for the Sacramento Superior Court and performs any professional or para-professional duty essential to the achievement of effective library operations.
  • Able to work self directed, set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Provides reference service, as requested by Sacramento Superior Court employees by telephone, e-mail, and using a variety of print and on-line resources and tools.
  • Evaluates information resources in all formats, integrates them to meet the needs of the Sacramento Superior court and discards or archives them as appropriate.
  • Uses project management and other team tools to accomplish projects.
  • Prepares inventory reports using library automation software.
  • Checks in library serials and other materials using library automation software.
  • Performs centralized library purchasing.
  • Verifies invoices for payment, responds to vendor inquiries and resolves billing discrepancies.
  • Prepares library inventories and collection layouts for multiple court locations.
  • Provides lead direction and assistance to law library staff in processing, distributing, updating Superior Court library materials and inventory maintenance routines.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Library science masters degree from an ALA-accredited institution
    Training and experience in the use of computers and library software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Three to five years of progressive supervisory experience in a library setting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • A valid California driver’s license.
  • Ability to pass a security clearance.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A strong commitment to excellent customer service.
  • Training in law librarianship and legal bibliography.
  • Project management and planning skills.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Starting salary ranges between $4,583.17 to 4,812.33 per month will be commensurate with education and experience. Additional $987 per month may be used toward the library’s cafeteria plan benefits. Cafeteria options include choice of several health plans, dental plan, short-term disability, life and other insurance plans, out-of pocket medical and family care reimbursement, and cash back. CalPERS retirement plan includes 7% employee contribution, optional 457 deferred compensation plan, employer paid long-term disability, and rapid transit or parking subsidies. Northern California Association of Law Libraries membership provided. Paid holidays 14 days, vacation accrual first three years are 6.7 hours per month, sick leave accrual 10 hours per month.

Humanities Librarian - UC Davis Job Opportunity

Humanities Librarian
Salary: $43,560 – $60,408 (Assistant Librarian II – Associate Librarian V)
(Appointment level and salary commensurate with experience and qualifications)

The Humanities and Social Sciences (H/SS) Department, located in the Peter J. Shields Library, University of California, Davis, seeks a dynamic and self-motivated librarian to provide effective reference, instruction and outreach services to a diverse campus community. The Humanities Librarian serves as the bibliographer for Literatures in English, Film Studies and the Performing Arts, developing and managing print and electronic collections to support campus research and instruction in assigned disciplines. With a team of nine H/SS bibliographers, the Humanities Librarian participates in creating new services and programs within an environment of rapidly changing information technologies, scholarly communication models and media resources.

Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of the H/SS Department, the Humanities Librarian conducts outreach services to the Departments of English, Theatre and Dance, and Film Studies, offers in-depth reference assistance and provides course integrated and course related instructional sessions. The librarian serves as subject specialist to the assigned disciplines, keeping abreast of evolving faculty and student information needs and selecting monographs, media and serials to support research and curricular initiatives. The Humanities Librarian also serves as a library liaison on issues related to course management software (SmartSite, based on Sakai, an open source learning management system), changing models of scholarly communication and access and delivery of audio and image resources. With other H/SS Librarians, the successful candidate provides traditional reference service within the department; some evening and weekend desk hours are required to provide general reference desk service. The librarian participates with other H/SS subject specialists to develop and implement new programs that enhance and expand humanities/social sciences information services. All H/SS subject specialists work collaboratively with colleagues throughout the UC system and the California Digital Library to cooperatively develop and manage print and electronic collections.

UC Davis librarians are expected to participate in library and system-wide conversations and planning, to be able to work comfortably in a collegial environment, and to be active professionally. Advancement in the Librarian series is based in part on professional contributions beyond the primary assignment; the successful candidate will show evidence or promise of such contributions.

Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or its equivalent. Experience providing reference services in an academic or large public library using standard humanities and social sciences print and electronic reference tools. Proficiency in one or more of the assigned disciplines, Literatures in English, Film Studies or Performing Arts. Commitment to public service. Familiar with the academic research process and the basics of scholarly communication. Ability to assess and evaluate large, complex journal databases and reference resources. Superior interpersonal and communications (oral and written) skills and a strong public service commitment. Demonstrated ability to work with colleagues and library users in a complex, dynamic, multicultural, service-oriented environment. Experience in a fast-paced, changing environment that requires librarians to be flexible self-starters, comfortable working collaboratively and independently to meet information needs of inter- and cross-disciplinary research and instruction.

Desired Qualifications
Experience with providing reference and instruction services in a humanities and social sciences research library environment. Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging trends, especially technologies and preservation related to audio and visual media resources. Advanced degree in relevant subject discipline. Working knowledge of French, German or Italian. Knowledge of specialized humanities/social sciences subject databases and internet resources. Experience in applying technology tools (Library 2.0) to curriculum development. Demonstrated skill in library instruction. Basic Understanding of collections and public services-related digital library issues.
