The General Library at the University of California, Davis seeks an energetic and public-spirited individual to serve as a temporary reference librarian in the Humanities & Social Sciences Department, Peter J. Shields Library. The successful candidate must enjoy working with library users and serving as a team member with the Department’s seven librarians in delivering responsive information services to a diverse interdisciplinary university community.

Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of the Humanities & Social Sciences Department, the successful candidate will provide reference desk assistance with print and electronic resources and off desk reference consultations. Depending on experience and interest, the librarian might participate in the development and delivery of library instruction services or assist other librarians with library instruction sessions. Hours of service may include evenings and weekends.

Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or its equivalent. Experience providing reference services in an academic or large public library. Familiarity with standard print and electronic arts, humanities, and social sciences reference tools and resources. Experience with using online catalogs and searching electronic databases, particularly in a web-based, networked environment. Excellent interpersonal and communications (oral and written) skills and a strong public service commitment are required. Demonstrated ability to work with colleagues, students, faculty and staff in a rapidly changing, complex multicultural organization. Superior oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Desired Qualifications
Successful experience providing reference and instruction services in an arts, humanities, and social sciences research library environment. Experience creating print and electronic reference and instruction guides or tutorials.

Responsibilities
This position will serve as a Monographs Cataloging Specialist at the Library Assistant III ($2,715-$3,522/mo.) or Library Assistant IV ($3,061-$4,011/mo.) level based upon qualifications. Copy catalog Chinese language monographs in all subject areas, using OCLC exact member contributed copy. Evaluate and revise selected bibliographic records.

At the Library Assistant III level: Verify and update descriptive cataloging following latest updates of Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, LC Rule Interpretations, and local cataloging procedures. Verify classification numbers using LC classification schedules and other classification tools. Verify and updates, as necessary, existing subject headings using Library of Congress Subject Headings, LC’s Subject Cataloging Manual, and other subject heading tools.

At the Library Assistant IV level: Catalog in specialized subject areas and prepare original catalog records for works by and about literary authors and analyzed titles lacking catalog copy for Chinese language monographs. Create full level descriptive records on OCLC, with call number and subject heading precedent from variant OCLC records, or from exact or variant records found in another online catalog, or as assigned in consultation with an original cataloger. Collaborate with other staff to assist in cataloging serials and non-book formats, e.g. microforms, video tapes, electronic resources, etc.

Requirements
Knowledge of Mandarin Chinese language. Skill in reading Chinese characters, both simplified and traditional; ability to transliterate them according to the pinyin Romanization system. Understanding of the relationship between pinyin and Wade-Giles systems preferred. Analytical skills and judgment to interpret information apply guidelines and make referrals, and ability to understand and implement goals, policies and procedures. Excellent decision making and problem solving skills. Demonstrated skill in using a variety of online databases, e.g. MELVYL catalog, or other online catalog, to do bibliographic searching, to use as a classification and subject verification tool, and to interpret data in order to resolve problems. Knowledge of an integrated library system and its catalog module to provide analytical and operational support. Knowledge of PC operation, software usage (wordprocessing, spreadsheets, databases), and digital file processing. Skill in typing and proofreading own work. Familiarity with Japanese and Korean language preferred.

Additional Qualifications at the Library Assistant III Level

Responsibilities
This position is one of two that functions as the Night and Weekend Lead and is responsible for representing the University Library to all Carlson Health Sciences Library (CHSL) patrons on evenings, weekends and holidays. Interprets and enforces library policies and procedures, providing and overseeing service at the circulation/reserves desk and providing basic reference assistance. Depending upon the shift, this position is responsible for opening and closing the library and overall security of the building (approximately 37,600 sq. ft.) and its collection. The library is open 40 hours per week on evenings and weekends during which one of the two incumbents is in charge of the facility during a period when reference librarians or other library career staff are not scheduled.

Requirements
Demonstrated experience in a library setting with the ability to interpret general library policies, procedures and practices; ability to exercise independent judgment, discretion, and creativity to make appropriate decisions. Skills to navigate online systems, catalogs, and other databases essential to circulation functions: knowledge of and/or experience with automated library systems; understanding of bibliographic and serials records to retrieve online and print records, and to verify citations using online print resources. Interpersonal and communication skills to interact in person and via telecommunication with a wide variety of people, with an emphasis on providing good customer service. Ability to effectively explain complex policies; and ability to remain calm and exercise tact and diplomacy at all times. Ability to exercise good judgment in responding to emergencies and unusual situations, in granting or refusing exceptions to existing policy, in making sound decisions, and in making appropriate referrals. Ability to function effectively as a work leader, to train, direct, evaluate, and motivate staff; to establish priorities, and organize a fluctuating workload for self and others to meet workload requirements. Special Conditions of Employment

Must be available to attend staff meetings during daytime hours and to substitute for other night and weekend staff on short notice. Physical Requirements

Serve as unit liaison with faculty and academic support staff in the areas of reserves and copyright compliance. Perform or oversee all aspects of reserves processing.

Requirements
Experience working in a library public service setting. Knowledge of interlibrary loan, document delivery and circulation practices, codes, policies and procedures preferred. Academic library experience preferred. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact with a diverse clientele with an emphasis on providing good customer service and promoting teamwork. Excellent bibliographic skills to retrieve and interpret records and to verify citations using online and printed resources and to determine appropriate tools for bibliographic checking. Creativity in searching and problem solving for the identification and location of obscure material. Ability to interpret, articulate and apply ILL/DDS, circulation and reference policies, procedures and practices. Knowledge and understanding of Digital Mellennium Copyright Act (DMCA), copyright guidelines and California Digital Library (CDL) negotiated access policies and their applications to interlibrary loan and document delivery services, including tracking and reporting responsibilities and procedures, preferred. Ability to organize a fluctuating work load with short-term deadlines, conflicting priorities and frequent interruptions. Flexibility to adjust to rapidly changing priorities and to adjust own workflow to assist in a back-up capacity during staffing shortages and periods of heavy workload. Excellent attention to detail with the ability to make comparisons and perceive differences.
