Responsibilities
Serve as Manager of the Library Personnel Office, a centralized personnel office supporting all employees of the General Library. Oversee the processing of employment, payroll, compensation, and benefits transactions for approximately 200 academic & staff employees and 200 student employees. Provide leadership for the automation of personnel actions. Provide staffing plans, develop position descriptions, and assess classifications. Direct staff recruitment and staff performance appraisal activities. Perform administrative analysis and statistical reporting. Advise University Librarian, senior administrative team, department heads, librarians and staff with regard to law, University policy, and collective bargaining unit contracts. Serve as liaison between the General Library and UCD Labor Relations, Benefits, Recruitment, Classification and Compensation, Student Employment, Disability Management, etc. Prepare or review all written documentation relating to staff corrective action. Analyze problems, recommend alternatives, mediate, and provide employee referrals to appropriate specialty services as needed. Coordinate supervisory and staff training programs.

Requirements
Demonstrated skills regarding the principles and practices of effective human resources and payroll management; ability to interpret and implement personnel policies and procedures and collective bargaining agreements. Excellent analytical skills to research, collect, and interpret data and information. Strong problem-solving skills to independently define issues and implement solutions. Excellent writing skills to independently compose correspondence, reports, analysis, training material and evaluations. Knowledge of correct grammar, punctuation and spelling. Skills to edit and revise the written work of others. Skills to investigate and collect relevant facts, identify and analyze key issues, research applicable policies and consider short- and long-term implications to make practical decisions and recommendations. Ability to compile, analyze, and interpret statistical records. Knowledge of benefits policies and procedures to include health benefits, disability, Family Medical Leave, and Worker’s Compensation (UC preferred). Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse workforce and to represent the General Library to various campus units including Office of the Provost, all units of Human Resources and Student Employment. Skill to develop training programs, make presentations and to conduct training to large and small groups. Strong computer skills with proficiency using spreadsheet, word processing, and database software, as well as computerized payroll/personnel and accounting systems and the internet. Knowledge of UC Payroll/Personnel System and the DaFIS accounting system preferred. Experience maintaining a high degree of discretion, integrity, and sensitivity to confidentiality and privacy. Ability to maintain confidential records and disburse information in a manner consistent with policy. Strong supervisory skills to recruit, train, evaluate, motivate and build an effective service-oriented team environment.

Reporting to the University Librarian, the AUL fills a vital role on the senior management team and is responsible for a wide range of duties related to the management of the Library’s Technical Services Departments. The AUL serves as an advocate and as a resource person for innovative tools and technologies that support bibliographic control, acquisitions, metadata creation, and linking and maintenance of library collections in all formats.

Responsibilities
Located in the technical services section, this position performs a variety of clerical/administrative task in support of departmental functions, and processes records for the NRLF. Responsible for providing full service at the Physical Sciences & Engineering Library Circulation Desk during assigned hours. Serves as back up for DDS, Bindery, and assists with the student supervision in both technical and circulation services. Provides back up to the Circulation Assistant for open/closing duties and to night/weekend position.

Requirements
Skills to understand and correctly implement complex library department/unit policies and procedures and to follow and execute detailed instructions with little or no supervision. Demonstrated experience with word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs in a Windows environment, and using the Internet. Ability to work independently, establish priorities and organize work to meet deadlines and work load requirements. Ability to operate integrated library systems, serials, cataloging, and circulation modules, online catalogs and other necessary database and equipment. Skill to perform and interpret searches using various online catalogs, databases and search engines to assist library patrons with their information needs. Strong keyboarding and writing skills to prepare written instructions, correspondence, take minutes at meetings, etc. Excellent proofreading skills. Excellent interpersonal skills to interact in person and by telecommunication in a diverse workplace. Skill to operate other types of equipment, including but not limited to photocopiers, fax machine, laser pens and scanners and a variety of hand tools. Skills to accurately review and modify bibliographic holdings and item records. Knowledge of serials cataloging rules and terminology and MARC formats to verify and evaluate online records helpful.

This position requires operating keyboard equipment and sitting at terminals for extended periods of time; interpreting pencilled annotations, computer printouts, CRT displays, micro images displayed on reader screen; printing legibly in limited spaces; handling uneven pieces of paper, using sharp instruments such as auls, pen knives, etc.; shelving and retrieving material from shelves 5-82 inches high in 36 inch aisles; lifting books weighing up to 15 lbs; maneuvering loaded book trucks through narrow or crowded passages, packing books on trucks and securing them with heavy straps for transportation outside the building.
