Responsibilities:

This position will serve as a Monographs Cataloging Specialist at the Library Assistant III ($2,715-$3,522/mo.) or Library Assistant IV ($3,061-$4,011/mo.) level based upon qualifications. Copy catalog Chinese language monographs in all subject areas, using OCLC exact member contributed copy. Evaluate and revise selected bibliographic records.

At the Library Assistant III level:
Verify and update descriptive cataloging following latest updates of Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, LC Rule Interpretations, and local cataloging procedures. Verify classification numbers using LC classification schedules and other classification tools. Verify and updates, as necessary, existing subject headings using Library of Congress Subject Headings, LC’s Subject Cataloging Manual, and other subject heading tools.

At the Library Assistant IV level:
Catalog in specialized subject areas and prepare original catalog records for works by and about literary authors and analyzed titles lacking catalog copy for Chinese language monographs. Create full level descriptive records on OCLC, with call number and subject heading precedent from variant OCLC records, or from exact or variant records found in another online catalog, or as assigned in consultation with an original cataloger. Collaborate with other staff to assist in cataloging serials and non-book formats, e.g. microforms, video tapes, electronic resources, etc.

Requirements:

Knolwedge of Mandarin Chinese language. Skill in reading Chinese characters, both simplified and traditional; ability to transliterate them according to the pinyin Romanization system. Understanding of the relationship between pinyin and Wade-Giles systems preferred. Analytical skills and judgment to interpret information apply guidelines and make referrals, and ability to understand and implement goals, policies and procedures. Excellent decision making and problem solving skills. Demonstrated skill in using a variety of online databases, e.g. MELVYL catalog, or other online catalog, to do bibliographic searching, to use as a classification and subject verification tool, and to interpret data in order to resolve problems. Knowledge of an integrated library system and its catalog module to provide analytical and operational support. Knowledge of PC operation, software usage (wordprocessing, spreadsheets, databases), and digital file processing. Skill in typing and proofreading own work. Familiarity with Japanese and Korean language preferred.

Skills to use Anglo-American Cataloging Rules and LC Rule Interpretations. Knowledge of LC Classification Schedules in limited areas to assign classification with or without copy. Scope: The health sciences libraries at the University of California, Davis (Carlson Health Sciences Library and Blaisdell Medical Library in Sacramento) serve the Schools of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine and UC Davis Health System. Staffing for these units consists of 9.6 FTE librarians, 15.5 FTE library assistants, and 10 FTE student assistants.

Responsibilities:

The Health Sciences Librarian delivers responsive, innovative information services that support the needs of a highly interdisciplinary health sciences and university community. The position reports to the Head of the Carlson Health Sciences Library and participates as a team member to: provide reference services at both libraries; perform liaison and outreach services to the School of Medicine, School of Veterinary Medicine and/or Health Informatics Program (HIP); develop and deliver information and instructional programs supporting the schools’ curricula; provide individualized consultation with clientele; participate in the health sciences component of the California Digital Library.

Required Qualifications:

Graduate degree in librarianship from an ALA-accredited institution or its equivalent. Academic course work in health sciences and/or experience as a medical librarian in a clinical setting. Familiarity with print and electronic standard subject indexes and major reference works in the health and/or life sciences. Demonstrated understanding of health scientists’ information needs and the application of information technologies in serving this population. Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Head of the Library Instruction Services Department, the librarian in this position teaches research and information literacy skills to undergraduate students and multi-disciplinary programs. Duties include course integrated instruction sessions and drop-in classes in the Library's state-of-the-art Instruction Lab and in faculty classrooms. In consultation with librarian subject specialists, instruction librarians work with faculty to develop library instruction sessions based on curricular needs; provide outreach to campus student groups to promote use of library resources, and partner with library and campus groups to develop and implement web-based teaching and learning resources. The librarian provides general reference service at the Shields Library Information Desk, including some nights and weekends.

Responsibilities include the design of informational and instructional materials in various media formats to enhance instructional efforts and assist staff at the Information Desk. The successful candidate, working in a collegial team environment with the Department's other members, will serve as the lead in the creation of online and web based tools and tutorials to promote effective use of the Library intended to enhance the information competency skills of UC Davis students.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or its equivalent. Familiarity with information literacy principles and reference service and reference sources in an academic library. Demonstrated experience with information technologies related to instruction, including web design, authoring tools, and emerging technologies such as RSS, podcasting, blogs, wikis. A commitment to public service and to the promotion of information literacy. Ability to work well in a team environment with students, faculty and staff in a culturally diverse and rapidly evolving environment. Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience teaching library instruction classes, preferably to undergraduates and reference experience in an academic library. Ability to develop a class presentation and teach effectively in an electronic classroom environment and to design online resources. Knowledge of adult learning and instructional design theory. Experience developing online resources, such as tutorials and guides. Knowledge of and experience in the use of authoring and presentation software such as Dreamweaver, Flash, Camtasia and/or Captivate. Experience with online instructional delivery products (e.g. Breeze Presenter) and learning management systems (Sakai, WebCT, Blackboard).
