The Library Systems Department is responsible for the installation, operation and maintenance of all the General Libraries computing and telecommunication equipment. This includes but is not limited to servers, microcomputers, terminals, bar code scanners, printers, document scanners, and wireless communication devices. This position also provides software support for various General Library staff software packages that include but are not limited to the Library ILS, Microsoft Office 2003, Outlook Express, Secure CRT, Secure FX, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Windows 2000, and Windows XP and Vista. The System’s department also maintains multiple labs located across various buildings and VLANs and over 250 public access terminals.

Responsibilities
Under supervision of the Head of the Workstation Support Unit, provide programming and computer support to all workstations and applicable servers in the University Library including its branch libraries. Configure and install/upgrade computer software and hardware, write detailed configuration documents, respond to requests for computer support from library employees and patrons, assist staff in performing basic computer operations in using various computer software, resolve computer and client/server related problems, provide assistance in the operation of library instruction facilities. Maintain and update library inventory database, assist library’s employees in development of database structures and customized programs for data manipulation.

Requirements
Ability to design, modify, code, test, debug and document systems using languages and scripting tools such as or similar to HTML, CSS, Javascript, VBScript, DOS Batch script, XML, MS Access.
Ability to learn new programming or scripting technologies as needed. Demonstrated experience in a client/server environment (Windows 2000/2003) including knowledge of network principles and protocols, especially TCP/IP. Ability to develop scripts for remotely centralized software deployment. Ability to manage Windows domain controllers. Ability to configure and manage centralized client patching system. Demonstrated knowledge and working experience in computer hardware, specifically related to PC (compatible) workstations and servers, Macintosh, peripherals such as printers, document scanners, CD-ROM drives, bar code readers and decoders, and backup devices; demonstrated knowledge of communication (including wireless) devices such as NIC’s, transceivers, and modems. Demonstrated skills and knowledge associated with set up and configuration of internal/external components for microcomputers. In depth knowledge of the wiring/connection scheme for each device as it relates to hosts, and/or to individual workstation equipment. Demonstrated diagnostic and problem analysis skills to effectively diagnose problems; evaluate options and implement proper corrective actions. Ability to apply diagnostic/debug procedures found in vendor technical manuals. Demonstrated experience with MS DOS, Windows NT, 2000, XP, Vista, and Mac OS. Demonstrated experience with advanced functions of current versions of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook). Experience with E-Mail clients (including PINE), secure Telnet, secure FTP, cross platform web-browsers, and document delivery systems. Demonstrated knowledge of Symantec Ghost or comparable software. Demonstrated technical writing skills to develop hardware specifications and configuration documentation. Working experience in service-oriented environments and strong interpersonal skills to work with a wide variety of individuals with varied levels of computer skills, ability to respond to questions in lay terms and to interpret technical information clearly and effectively. Skills to train and supervise student employees. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work with a wide variety of individuals with varied levels of computer skills, ability to respond to questions in lay terms and to interpret technical information clearly and effectively. Ability to follow oral or written instructions accurately and provide periodical status of report to the supervisor. Demonstrated personal organization skills to establish work priorities and simultaneously complete multiple tasks to meet required deadlines with frequent interruptions.

This lead position is responsible for managing approval plan acquisitions for Health Sciences and other approval and standing order plans in the Sciences, including the domestic plans for Biological Sciences and Physical Sciences and Engineering. Extensive use of one or more vendor databases in performing increasingly automated acquisitions routines. Assures that expectations for timeliness and quality assurance are met in handling approval material and ensures that effective communication is maintained with subject librarians, other library staff and vendors. Receives and processes approval shipments, routing as needed for selector review, enters invoices in ILS and forwards to Accounting. Participates in regular unit management meetings.

Requirements
Demonstrated experience working in a library setting; knowledge of both technical services and public service expectations and priorities. Skills to understand and correctly implement complex library/departmental/unit policies and procedures, to interpret data and to solve problems independently. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to interact effectively and tactfully with vendor representatives and co-workers by phone, e-mail, fax, and in person. Ability to adapt to changing deadlines, procedures and fluctuating workloads. Skills to use various online databases including OCLC, local ILS, vendor databases, and Library of Congress MARC documentation. Knowledge of vendor and publisher invoicing practices to accurately review accounts, identify and resolve problems. Working knowledge of MARC bibliographic formats to identify and verify correct bibliographic records. Responsibilities
Support the instructional and research needs of UC Davis faculty, staff, and students by procuring materials not readily available in the Carlson Health Sciences Library’s (CHSL) collection through interlibrary loan and document delivery services, utilizing timely, cost-effective and efficient means and procedures to submit requests to potential lenders while ensuring compliance with the National ILL Code,UC ILL Code, contractual agreements and copyright guidelines. Support Library Circulation and Reserves Services by attending the public service desk, granting borrowing privileges, maintaining the patron database and maintaining and providing access to the reserves collection. Serve as unit liaison with faculty and academic support staff in the areas of reserves and copyright compliance. Perform or oversee all aspects of reserves processing.

Requirements
Experience working in a library public service setting. Knowledge of interlibrary loan, document delivery and circulation practices, codes, policies and procedures preferred. Academic library experience preferred. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact with a diverse clientele with an emphasis on providing good customer service and promoting teamwork. Excellent bibliographic skills to retrieve and interpret records and to verify citations using online and printed resources and to determine appropriate tools for bibliographic checking. Creativity in searching and problem solving for the identification and location of obscure material. Ability to interpret, articulate and apply ILL/DDS, circulation and reference policies, procedures and practices. Knowledge and understanding of Digital Mellennium Copyright Act (DMCA), copyright guidelines and California Digital Library (CDL) negotiated access policies and their applications to interlibrary loan and document delivery services, including tracking and reporting responsibilities and procedures, preferred. Ability to organize a fluctuating work load with short-term deadlines, conflicting priorities and frequent interruptions. Flexibility to adjust to rapidly changing priorities and to adjust own workflow to assist in a back-up capacity during staffing shortages and periods of heavy workload. Excellent attention to detail with the ability to make comparisons and perceive differences. Skills to operate on-line systems, catalogs, other databases necessary for ILL and circulation operations, and to utilize Microsoft Office software programs and electronic communication media including e-mail, ftp, and the WWW. Excellent writing skills to compose reports, proposals, correspondence, memos, e-mail, and to update instructional manuals. Math skills to compile statistics, perform calculations, interpret and analyze data.

Ability to retrieve books from library stacks; maneuver loaded book truck and transport via elevator; lift books up to 15 pounds and pass across a counter lift boxes of paper weighing up to 30 pounds; reaching shelving and retrieving books from shelves 5" to 82" high in aisles 36" wide; manipulating packaging materials. Operate a keyboard for extended periods of time.
