University Librarian - University of California, Davis

The University of California, Davis, invites nominations and applications for the position of University Librarian. The General Library of the University of California, Davis, is a member of the Association of Research Libraries and a major educational and scholarly resource, operating as an integral part of the University while recognizing obligations to a wider public, particularly the people of California. Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor and serving as a member of the Council of Deans and Vice Chancellors, the University Librarian provides overall leadership of the UC Davis General Library in support of University research, instruction, patient care, and community outreach.

The colleges of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Biological Sciences, Engineering, and Letters and Science; the schools of Education, Management, Medicine, Nursing, and Veterinary Medicine; and the UC Davis Health System are all served by the UC Davis General Library, both in Davis and in Sacramento. The Library houses comprehensive, world-class agricultural and veterinary medicine collections, especially in viticulture and enology, environmental sciences and ecology, and comparative medicine as well as broadly based humanities, social sciences, and sciences collections. The Special Collections feature a diverse range of topics from agricultural sciences to Western Americana to photographs of rural California and Oregon and a rich University Archives showcasing the campus's 100-year history.

The UC Davis General Library is an active collaborative contributor to the highly successful University of California collective of campus libraries and the California Digital Library. Together, the University of California libraries and California Digital Library provide state-of-the-art services, such as the eScholarship, open-access, scholarly publishing platform and UC Publishing Services, and access to a wealth of books and journals (~33 million titles), electronic journals (~34,400 titles), 180,000 digital images via Calisphere, 20,000+ special collection guides via Online Archive of California, and over 422 million web files captured by the Web Archiving Service.

Science Data Librarian - Stanford University Libraries & Academic Information Resources

The Stanford University Libraries & Academic Information Resources (SULAIR) seeks a Librarian to work with faculty, graduate students and SULAIR colleagues to collect, manage, curate, provide access to and assist in the analysis of science and engineering data. As a member of the Science and Engineering Resource Group, you will help with the active management of scientific content acquired by the libraries and produced and used by Stanford researchers, in order to enhance its preservation and access now and into the future. This is an excellent opportunity for a self-starter to help develop a new program at one of the world's leading research institutions.

This position requires a team player with a degree in engineering or the sciences (advanced degree and/or research experience recommended), knowledge of and interest in academic or research libraries and the research environment in a major university and a demonstrated understanding of the issues involved with data management/curation, including format migration, preservation, metadata, data retrieval and use issues. Demonstrated expertise in data management or information science is essential and would preferably take the form of direct experience with data curation/management, but could include an MLS/MLIS degree with an emphasis on data management. Effective use of current technologies, an interest to stay abreast of technological advances and the ability to acquire new technological skills and resolve problems is also required, as are strong communication skills and demonstrated potential to make professional accomplishments relevant to the position, i.e. scholarly publications, teaching or library-related publications and presentations. An understanding of the research process as demonstrated by academic or work experience is desired, as is experience with one of the commonly used repository platforms, strong time management skills, flexibility, creativity and an innovative attitude.

About the Position:

The Sacramento Public Library is seeking dynamic and forward thinking candidates with excellent leadership skills to lead a Central Library division or a medium-large Branch Library.

We currently have one (1) open position at our Central Library and through this examination process will be establishing an eligibility list for future openings.

Minimum Qualifications:

Masters Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited college or university

Three years as a Professional Librarian, including at least two years in a supervisory capacity.

Library Services Specialist, Archivist for Special Collection - Sacramento Public Library

About the Position:
The Sacramento Public Library is seeking self directed candidates with excellent project management skills for a new position: Library Services Specialist, Archivist for Special Collections supporting the Sacramento Room. The position manages the archives and special collections of the Sacramento Room including acquisitions, collection maintenance, reference and outreach. Under the direction of a Library Supervisor III, this position will plan and implement library digital projects and initiatives and maintain print and digital archives. The successful candidate must be skilled in records organization, preservation of paper and electronic records, and able to work both independently and collaboratively.

Additionally, responsibilities include providing reference services; providing access to the collections for researchers and the general public; exhibition of collection materials; assistance with the cultivation and stewardship of major donors; outreach and marketing. This position oversees one (1) Library Technician.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Masters Degree in Library and Information Science (preferred), History or related field, including archival coursework and practicum (highly desired).
  • Working knowledge of standard archival practice and emerging digital formats and standards.

Law Library Administrator - El Dorado County Law Library

The El Dorado County Law Library, located at 550 Main Street, Suite A, Placerville, CA 95667 530-621-6423, is currently seeking candidates for the position of full-time Law Library Administrator.

DEFINITION
The Law Library Administrator serves at the pleasure of the El Dorado County Law Library Board of Trustees and provides professional leadership in directing the operation of the County Law Library, and do all related work as directed by the Board of Trustees.

DUTIES may include, but are not necessarily limited to:

  • Plans and directs the operation of the County Law Library in accordance with policies and procedures authorized by the Board of Law Library Trustees and the Business and Professions code, Division 3, Chapter 5.
  • Provide directional reference assistance and service to library users.
  • Analyze library and user needs and makes recommendations to the Board.
  • Plan, develop, and conduct library tours.
  • Maintain serial collections.
  • Processing of monthly accounts payable, including spreadsheet application.
  • Preparation of Annual Report.
  • Operate equipment including online and CD-ROM legal research programs, FAX, PC,
  • Typewriter, copy machine, security devises.
  • Handle routine correspondence.
  • Keep up to date on legal issues and law librarian ship.
  • Process and put away library materials.
  • Update library materials by filing, pocket parts, or other means of supplementation
  • Re-shelve books and other library materials.
  • Maintain the library and branch library electronic research equipment.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION

Knowledge of:

  • Legal research, including CD-ROM and online services.
  • Management principles and practice.
  • Library purposes, organization.
  • Budget principles and practices.
  • Ability to perform automated bookkeeping and accounting tasks.
  • Windows based software, including Word and Excel.
  • Web page design and management.

Skill/Ability to:

  • Plan, direct and evaluate programs and activities.
  • Train, supervise and evaluate temporary staff.
  • Analyze and resolve problems.
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with others.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Administer a budget.
  • Operate and instruct others in the use of computers, copy machines and other standard office equipment.
  • Alphabetical and library numbering system ability.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:

Education: Completion of a Library Sciences graduate program with emphasis in law librarianship or completion of an approved paralegal training program.

OR

Three years of experience researching and drafting a variety of legal documents preferable supplemented by course work in legal research and legal office practice may be substituted for the educational requirement.

AND

Three years professional library experience of professional, business management experience.
