The General Library consists of the Peter J. The UC Davis General Library maintains a sophisticated and complex computing environment to serve the needs of library staff and its patrons. This environment consists of numerous Linux, Solaris, and Windows servers to provide critical functions to support library patrons and staff. In addition to servers, the Library has approximately 250 workstations for library users and approximately 250 staff workstations as well as a number of local and networked printers and scanners. These workstations include those used in the library’s three teaching labs. The workstations are located in 4 buildings on the UC Davis campus and at the Medical Center in Sacramento. The Systems Department staff assists library staff located in all of these locations.

Responsibilities
This position reports to the Unix Administrator and performs routine system and network administration tasks such as provisioning resources, monitoring availability, and trouble shooting access; also special projects such as evaluating and designing solutions for systems projects and data migrations. Evaluates and implements open source programs and designs advanced solutions to diverse problems. Assists other Systems Department projects by coding, debugging and testing programs, and updates existing programs to support software and hardware upgrades. Provides technical support for digital library initiatives. Position is an advanced web developer on the Web Services Team which is responsible for designing and influencing standards for coding and documenting of library web pages. Maintains current and accurate configuration tables for the Integrated Library System OPAC (Aleph), and federated search engine (Metalib).

Requirements
Excellent attention to detail with consistent follow through on long, involved projects. Effective time management skills to establish and adhere to schedules while balancing multiple priorities. Excellent oral and written skills to communicate and interpret technical information to non-technical staff; to communicate with technical and non-technical individuals in the library and outside of the library; to prepare documentation and reports; and to resolve problems or train users in new procedures and routines. Ability to apply systems analysis and diagnostic concepts to analyze problems, develop and evaluate potential solutions individually and as a member of a team. Experience using HTML, XML, XSL, CSS, RSS, and other data encoding formats. Demonstrated knowledge of web security pitfalls and secure coding techniques (e.g. XSS, SQL Injection). Experience with procedural and object oriented programming in languages including at least: JavaScript, Perl, PHP, and Unix Shells. Java, C, Python preferred. Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience administering UNIX-like operating systems. Windows preferred. Demonstrated experience managing UNIX-like systems demanding high levels of uptime. Responsibilities
Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Humanities/Social Sciences, the Head of the UC Davis Shields Library Access Services Department provides the leadership and vision to meet proactively the research, teaching, and community service mission of the UC Davis faculty, staff, and students. The position coordinates and oversees the Circulation, Reserves, ILL, Document Delivery, Stacks Management, Library Security, and Mail Services Units in the Peter J. Shields Library. S/he serves as a principal resource regarding the use of library acquired or licensed copyrighted materials. As the administrative head of the Access Services Department, the incumbent guides the staff (4 direct reports, 28 FTE support staff and 24 FTE student assistants) in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating ongoing operations and special projects.

UC Davis librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, to be able to work comfortably in a shared decision-making environment, and to be active professionally. Advancement in the Librarian series is based in part on professional contributions beyond the primary assignment; the successful candidate will show evidence or promise of such contributions.

Qualifications
Master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or its equivalent. Substantial experience in at least two areas of Access Services (circulation, reserves, stacks management, ILL, document delivery). Significant supervisory experience involving a range of staff classifications, including student employees, in a large, complex public, academic, or research library. Excellent interpersonal and communications (oral and written) skills and a strong public service commitment are required. Candidate must have a record of working effectively and collaboratively with a variety of library employees and library users in a complex, dynamic, multicultural, service-oriented environment, and of leading and motivating staff. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the creative use of current and emerging trends and technologies related to access services, and experience with integrated library systems, such as the Ex Libris Aleph system.

Responsibilities
This lead position is responsible for managing approval plan acquisitions for Health Sciences and other approval and standing order plans in the Sciences, including the domestic plans for Biological Sciences and Physical Sciences and Engineering. Extensive use of one or more vendor databases in performing increasingly automated acquisitions routines. Assures that expectations for timeliness and quality assurance are met in handling approval material and ensures that effective communication is maintained with subject librarians, other library staff and vendors. Receives and processes approval shipments, routing as needed for selector review, enters invoices in ILS and forwards to Accounting. Participates in regular unit management meetings.

Requirements
Demonstrated experience working in a library setting; knowledge of both technical services and public service expectations and priorities. Skills to understand and correctly implement complex library/departmental/unit policies and procedures, to interpret data and to solve problems independently. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to interact effectively and tactfully with vendor representatives and co-workers by phone, e-mail, fax, and in person. Ability to adapt to changing deadlines, procedures and fluctuating workloads. Skills to use various online databases including OCLC, local ILS, vendor databases, and Library of Congress MARC documentation. Knowledge of vendor and publisher invoicing practices to accurately review accounts, identify and resolve problems. Working knowledge of MARC bibliographic formats to identify and verify correct bibliographic records. Excellent editing and proofreading skills; excellent attention to detail; ability to quickly and accurately identify, compare, and perceive differences in data. Clerical and math skills to include accurate typing, use of keyboard, maintaining files (electronic and paper) and statistics.

Responsibilities
This position functions as the Night and Weekend Lead and is responsible for representing the University Library to all Shields library patrons on evenings, weekends and holidays, and for interpreting and enforcing unit, department, and library policies and procedures, and overseeing all circulation related services. Responsible for opening and closing the Shields Library, providing and overseeing service at the circulation desk, scheduling and overseeing student assistants, overall security of the building (approximately 386,000 sq. ft.) on nights, weekends and some holidays, and providing limited reference assistance when reference desks are closed.

Requirements
Skills to interpret general Library policies, procedures and practices; ability to exercise independent judgment, discretion and creativity to make appropriate decisions. Ability to organize a fluctuating workload, establish priorities, and meet deadlines. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact successfully, in person and by telecommunication, with a variety of people including co-workers and patrons. Ability to function effectively as a work leader and to train, direct, and evaluate student staff. Skills to appropriately extrapolate from one situation to another, and to recognize questions, situations, and problems which should be referred to another staff member, unit, or department. Ability to exercise good judgment in responding to emergencies and unusual situations, in granting or refusing exceptions to existing policy, in making sound decisions, and in making appropriate referrals. Skill to navigate online systems, catalogs and other databases essential to Circulation functions; knowledge of and/or experience with automated Library systems; understanding of bibliographic and serial records to retrieve online and print records, and to verify citations using online print resources. Skills to operate various types of office equipment, including, but not limited to, computer terminals, photocopy equipment, fax machine, and computer and typewriter keyboards. Knowledge of Library of Congress classification system. Ability to use and instruct patrons in Harvest, Melvyl, and other databases.

Special Conditions of Employment
This position is a critical position and subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history and identity check. Flexibility to substitute for other N & W Lead Assistants on short notice; work additional hours as needed. No smoking, eating or drinking in work area.

Physical Requirements
Interpret standard print and handwritten notations; use computer screens and operate keyboard for extended periods; pick up books weighing 10-20 lbs.; push loaded book trucks weighing up to 600 lbs.; work at counter and in congested desk area for extended periods of time.
