About the Position:
The Sacramento Public Library is seeking dynamic, forward thinking candidates for our Youth Services Librarian position.
This position specializes in programming for either children, young adults, or a combination of both, depending on the vacancy. The preferred candidates will have a demonstrated interest and/or experience in youth services librarian work.
This announcement will be used to create an eligibility list that will be used to staff Youth Services Librarian openings that occur in the next 6 months.

The Sacramento Public Library Authority is the fourth largest library system in California serving the public in the City and County of Sacramento and five surrounding cities. The Sacramento Public Library operates 28 libraries, with a main library in downtown Sacramento and a new branch which will be opening in late August. Physical and Environmental Conditions:

Job Summary

The Librarian is responsible for providing reference, research and information literacy instruction to the campus community, using library materials in all formats. Knowledge:

The staff consists of 4 librarians, 9 paraprofessionals and student assistants.


Responsibilities:
Develops and adapts technologically innovative services to meet the information needs of the campus life sciences research community. In coordination with the Head Librarian and the Head, Information Services, the Emerging Technologies Librarian is responsible for developing a program of web-based bibliographic instruction for the biological and natural resources. Coordinates the development and maintenance of the Bioscience and Natural Resources Library Web site. Trains library staff in innovative uses of software. Administers Macintosh Computer classroom, including investigation of MacIntosh software products.

This librarian will share responsibilities for scheduled reference desk service, as well as electronic reference, providing general and specialized reference in biology and natural resources. Develops web-based instruction through self-instructional techniques such as web-based tutorials and handouts, and participates in classroom instruction (course-related and on specialized electronic resources). UCB librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, to be able to work comfortably in a shared decision-making environment, and to be active professionally.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

- Accredited graduate degree in librarianship/information studies; or equivalent combination of education and 3 years of recent research library experience.
- Experience with web-page design using web development and, graphics tools and scripting languages, such as XML, XSLT, CSS, Dreamweaver, Flash and Photoshop.
- Demonstrated skills in creation of Web documents, including ability to write concisely and effectively for the web.
- Demonstrated aptitude for teaching and developing user-oriented documentation.
- Experience providing reference services with relevant life sciences reference material.
- Demonstrated initiative and flexibility, and ability to work both independently as well as collaboratively; excellent interpersonal, communications, organizational and analytic skills.


Desired:

- Academic background in biological sciences/natural resources.
- Fully functional skills in XHTML, CSS, Javascript, and knowledge of Windows and OS X operating systems.
- Working knowledge of applications running on Macintoshes to be able to install, configure and troubleshoot workstation problems.
- Demonstrated implementation of the concepts and goals of information literacy.
- Experience with integrating new and emerging technologies into the delivery of information service.
- Knowledge of instructional design principles in an online environment.

Job Description:

Under the general direction of the Supervising Librarian II, the incumbent serves as the Historical Records Officer for the California Department of Transportation. As such the incumbent is responsible for the operation of a formal program to organize, develop, and maintain a departmental collection of historical records, including documents, maps, photographs, and artifacts, in order to provide reference service on Departmental and California highway history. Provide direct reference assistance in locating information relevant to Departmental history and to California highway development; creates and maintains a referral directory to the location of relevant historical materials in various divisions and districts of the Department, and related organizations. Determines the extent and value of various Departmental historical collections, including documentary records, photographs, maps, and artifacts; working with other staff, develops, maintains, and contributes creative content relative to Departmental history to the Library’s website, blog, and other online services. Must understand historical research procedures and have an enthusiastic appreciation for the value of historical data for various departmental purposes.
