This position is located in: Shields Library - Monographs Department and is represented by a union. Working hours: M-F, between 8am and 5pm.

This External position is for UCD/UCDHS employees and the general public. Applications from the general public and UCD/UCDHS employees will be considered simultaneously. The General Library consists of the Peter J. Shields Library, the Carlson Health Sciences Library and the Physical Sciences & Engineering Library in Davis, and the Medical Center Library in Sacramento. Responsibilities:

This position will serve as a Monographs Cataloging Specialist at the Library Assistant III ($2,715-$3,522/mo.) or Library Assistant IV ($3,061-$4,011/mo.) level based upon qualifications. Copy catalog Chinese language monographs in all subject areas, using OCLC exact member contributed copy. Evaluate and revise selected bibliographic records.

At the Library Assistant III level:
Verify and update descriptive cataloging following latest updates of Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, LC Rule Interpretations, and local cataloging procedures. Verify classification numbers using LC classification schedules and other classification tools. Verify and updates, as necessary, existing subject headings using Library of Congress Subject Headings, LC’s Subject Cataloging Manual, and other subject heading tools.

At the Library Assistant IV level:
Catalog in specialized subject areas and prepare original catalog records for works by and about literary authors and analyzed titles lacking catalog copy for Chinese language monographs. Create full level descriptive records on OCLC, with call number and subject heading precedent from variant OCLC records, or from exact or variant records found in another online catalog, or as assigned in consultation with an original cataloger. Collaborate with other staff to assist in cataloging serials and non-book formats, e.g. microforms, video tapes, electronic resources, etc.

Requirements:

Knolwedge of Mandarin Chinese language. Skill in reading Chinese characters, both simplified and traditional; ability to transliterate them according to the pinyin Romanization system. Understanding of the relationship between pinyin and Wade-Giles systems preferred. Analytical skills and judgment to interpret information apply guidelines and make referrals, and ability to understand and implement goals, policies and procedures. Excellent decision making and problem solving skills. Demonstrated skill in using a variety of online databases, e.g. MELVYL catalog, or other online catalog, to do bibliographic searching, to use as a classification and subject verification tool, and to interpret data in order to resolve problems. Knowledge of an integrated library system and its catalog module to provide analytical and operational support. Knowledge of PC operation, software usage (wordprocessing, spreadsheets, databases), and digital file processing. Skill in typing and proofreading own work. Familiarity with Japanese and Korean language preferred.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AT THE LIBRARY ASSISTANT III LEVEL:
Skills to use Anglo-American Cataloging Rules and LC Rule Interpretations. Knowledge of LC Classification Schedules in limited areas to assign classification with or without copy. Knowledge of LC subject headings and current sources of verification of the, i.e., LCSAF, LC Subject Cataloging Manual. Skill in determining the basic subject content of a book in order to evaluate subject headings. Familiarity with OCLC’s Bibliographic Formats and Standards.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AT THE LIBRARY ASSISTANT IV LEVEL:
Experience using Anglo-American Cataloging Rules and LC Rule Interpretations. Experience using LC Classification Schedules in limited areas to assign classification with or without copy. Experience using LC subject headings and current sources of verification of the, i.e., LCSAF, LC Subject Cataloging Manual. Experience using LCAF authority structure to search, identify, verify, and export authority records and to resolve discrepancies as appropriate. Knowledge of all MARC formats to verify and evaluate online records in OCLC and various online catalogs. Experience using a major bibliographic utility’s computer applications (e.g. OCLC Connexion,/CJK).

Special Conditions of Employment:

Physical Requirements:
Position requires lifting materials weighing up to 15 pounds; maneuvering loaded book trucks weighing 300-700 pounds; reaching or bending for materials on shelves from 5" to 85" high.
