Health Sciences Reference, Instruction and Outreach Librarian

Scope: The health sciences libraries at the University of California, Davis (Carlson Health Sciences Library and Blaisdell Medical Library in Sacramento) serve the Schools of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine and UC Davis Health System. Staffing for these units consists of 9.6 FTE librarians, 15.5 FTE library assistants, and 10 FTE student assistants.

Responsibilities:
The Health Sciences Librarian delivers responsive, innovative information services that support the needs of a highly interdisciplinary health sciences and university community. The position reports to the Head of the Carlson Health Sciences Library and participates as a team member to: provide reference services at both libraries; perform liaison and outreach services to the School of Medicine, School of Veterinary Medicine and/or Health Informatics Program (HIP); develop and deliver information and instructional programs supporting the schools’ curricula; provide individualized consultation with clientele; participate in the health sciences component of the California Digital Library.

Required Qualifications:
Graduate degree in librarianship from an ALA-accredited institution or its equivalent. Academic course work in health sciences and/or experience as a medical librarian in a clinical setting. Familiarity with print and electronic standard subject indexes and major reference works in the health and/or life sciences. Demonstrated understanding of health scientists’ information needs and the application of information technologies in serving this population. Excellent computer and internet skills, especially in a networked environment. Strong bibliographic verification skills. Superior oral and written communications skills and interpersonal skills. Excellent analytical and organizational skills. Experience in designing web-based resources for reference and instruction. Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively. Ability to work with colleagues, students, faculty and staff in a rapidly changing, complex, multicultural environment. Demonstrated initiative and flexibility in adapting to change. Strong commitment to public service. Ability to develop and to deliver discipline-related instructional sessions for faculty and students.

Desired Qualifications:
Degree in life and/or health sciences and successful experience in providing reference service in a health sciences and/or life sciences academic research environment. Database search skills, particularly with Medline and other National Library of Medicine (NLM) resources. Familiarity with the activities and services of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) and the Regional Medical Library (RML) programs. Familiarity with bibliographic management software programs.

The UC Davis Health Sciences Libraries support information needs of the research, teaching and clinical programs of the UC Davis Schools of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine.
