This position is located in: Shields Library - Catalog and is represented by a union. Working hours: M-F between 8am and 5pm.

This External position is for UCD/UCDHS employees and the general public. Applications from the general public and UCD/UCDHS employees will be considered simultaneously. The General Library consists of the Peter J. Shields Library, the Carlson Health Sciences Library and the Physical Sciences & Engineering Library in Davis, and the Medical Center Library in Sacramento. Responsibilities:
Copy catalog monographs in English and Roman alphabet foreign languages using National Library of Medicine and Library of Congress classification and subject headings, including non-book formats, e.g. video tapes, electronic resources, etc. Catalog using marginal bibliographic copy for all medical subjects and other specialized subject areas. Evaluate and revise selected bibliographic records supplied by other libraries. Verify, update, and supply, as necessary, subject headings using National Library of Medicine and Library of Congress Subject Headings. Add volumes to multi-volume sets and analyzed series. Provide original and enhance-level cataloging for works by and about literary authors, analyzed titles and variant editions. Resolve problems arising in the performance of the listed cataloging duties and other complex cataloging problems. Special projects and other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
Knowledge of academic cataloging functions and procedures preferred. Analytical skills and judgment to interpret information, apply guidelines and make referrals. Ability to understand and implement goals, policies and procedures. Skills using a variety of online databases, e.g. MELVYL catalog, or other online catalog to do bibliographic searching, to use as a classification and subject verification tool, and to interpret data in order to resolve problems. Experience in recognizing and resolving discrepancies, including those referred by other staff. Skills using Anglo-American Cataloging Rules and LC Rule Interpretations. Knowledge of LC Classification Schedules in limited areas to assign classification with or without copy. Knowledge of classification based on National Library of Medicine to assign classification with or without copy, preferred. Knowledge of LC subject headings and current sources of verification of the, i.e., LCSAF, LC Subject Cataloging Manual. Knowledge of National Library of Medicine Subject Headings and current sources of verification of the, i.e., NLM Subject Cataloging Manual, preferred. Skill in determining the basic subject content of a book in order to assign or evaluate subject headings. Knowledge of LCAF authority structure to search, identify, verify, and export authority records and to resolve discrepancies as appropriate. Knowledge of a modern European language to provide original descriptive cataloging of the material and to do bibliographic searching and editing preferred.

Special Conditions of Employment:
No smoking in building; no eating or drinking in work area.

Physical Requirements:
Position requires lifting materials weighing up to 15 pounds; maneuvering loaded book trucks weighing 300-700 pounds; reaching or bending for materials on shelves from 5" to 85" high. Position requires reading fine print, computer printouts, CRT screen; operating keyboard equipment.
