This position is located in: Shields Library - Access Services Department and is represented by a union. Working hours: Variable: nights, wknds & some holidays.

This External position is for UCD/UCDHS employees and the general public. Applications from the general public and UCD/UCDHS employees will be considered simultaneously.
The General Library consists of the Peter J. Shields Library, the Carlson Health Sciences Library and the Physical Sciences & Engineering Library in Davis, and the Medical Center Library in Sacramento. For more information about the General Library see http://www.lib.ucdavis.edu.

Responsibilities
This position functions as the Night and Weekend Lead and is responsible for representing the University Library to all Shields library patrons on evenings, weekends and holidays, and for interpreting and enforcing unit, department, and library policies and procedures, and overseeing all circulation related services. Responsible for opening and closing the Shields Library, providing and overseeing service at the circulation desk, scheduling and overseeing student assistants, overall security of the building (approximately 386,000 sq. ft.) on nights, weekends and some holidays, and providing limited reference assistance when reference desks are closed.

Requirements
Skills to interpret general Library policies, procedures and practices; ability to exercise independent judgment, discretion and creativity to make appropriate decisions. Ability to organize a fluctuating workload, establish priorities, and meet deadlines. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact successfully, in person and by telecommunication, with a variety of people including co-workers and patrons. Ability to function effectively as a work leader and to train, direct, and evaluate student staff. Skills to appropriately extrapolate from one situation to another, and to recognize questions, situations, and problems which should be referred to another staff member, unit, or department. Ability to exercise good judgment in responding to emergencies and unusual situations, in granting or refusing exceptions to existing policy, in making sound decisions, and in making appropriate referrals. Skill to navigate online systems, catalogs and other databases essential to Circulation functions; knowledge of and/or experience with automated Library systems; understanding of bibliographic and serial records to retrieve online and print records, and to verify citations using online print resources. Skills to operate various types of office equipment, including, but not limited to, computer terminals, photocopy equipment, fax machine, and computer and typewriter keyboards. Knowledge of Library of Congress classification system. Ability to use and instruct patrons in Harvest, Melvyl, and other databases.

Special Conditions of Employment
This position is a critical position and subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history and identity check. Work nights, weekends and some holidays. Some daytime hours when necessary to attend regular staff meetings and when the library has no night schedule. Flexibility to substitute for other N & W Lead Assistants on short notice; work additional hours as needed. No smoking, eating or drinking in work area.

Physical Requirements
Interpret standard print and handwritten notations; use computer screens and operate keyboard for extended periods; pick up books weighing 10-20 lbs.; push loaded book trucks weighing up to 600 lbs.; work at counter and in congested desk area for extended periods of time.
