Working hours: M-F, 8-5.

This External position is for UCD/UCDHS employees and the general public. Applications from the general public and UCD/UCDHS employees will be considered simultaneously.
The General Library consists of the Peter J. Shields Library, the Carlson Health Sciences Library and the Physical Sciences & Engineering Library in Davis, and the Medical Center Library in Sacramento. For more information about the General Library see http://www.lib.ucdavis.edu.

Responsibilities
This position will serve as Library Assistant II ($2,423-$3,106/mo.) or Library Assistant III ($2,715-$3,522/mo.) based upon qualifications. Copy catalog music scores and monographs in English and Roman alphabet foreign languages in music and other subject areas for all locations, including non-book formats, video recordings, sound recordings, etc. Evaluate and revise selected bibliographic records supplied by other libraries through national and international bibliographic databases. Copy may require the addition and verification of access points (forms of names and subject headings) upgrading of description, and verification of classification. At the Library Assistant II level, incumbent will consult closely with and refer cataloging problems or discrepancies to supervisor. At the Library Assistant III level, incumbent will use independent judgment to update records, resolve cataloging problems and reconcile discrepancies in various online and manual files through consulting with various bibliographic tools.

Requirements
Ability to read music scores in established genres, involving any number of performers. Knowledge of literature and performance practice in music, as demonstrated by formal coursework in music history and/or theory, or equivalent. Computer skills and knowledge of software usage, and digital file processing (word processing, spreadsheets, databases. Typing/keyboarding skills and ability to proofread own work. Excellent decision making and problem solving skills. Knowledge of a modern European language(s) to provide original descriptive cataloging of the material and to do bibliographic searching and editing. Skill in determining the basic subject content of a book or score in order to assign or evaluate subject headings.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS REQUIRED AT THE LIBRARY ASSISTANT II LEVEL:
Knowledge of online databases, e.g. MELVYL catalog, or other online catalog, to do bibliographic searching. Familiarity with an integrated library system and its catalog module to provide operational support preferred. Skill in recognizing and resolving discrepancies. Skill to use Anglo-American Cataloging Rules and LC Rule Interpretations preferred. Familiarity with LC subject headings and current sources of verification of same, i.e., LCSAF, LC Subject Cataloging Manual, preferred. Knowledge of LCAF authority structure to search, identify, verify, and export authority records and to recognize discrepancies as appropriate, preferred.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS REQUIRED AT THE LIBRARY ASSISTANT III LEVEL:
Demonstrated skill using a variety of online databases, e.g. MELVYL catalog, or other online catalog, to do bibliographic searching, to use as a classification and subject verification tool, and to interpret data in order to resolve problems. Knowledge of an integrated library system and its catalog module to provide analytical and operational support. Experience in recognizing and resolving discrepancies, including those referred by other staff. Knowledge of and ability to use Anglo-American Cataloging Rules and LC Rule Interpretations. Knowledge of LC Classification Schedules in limited areas to verify classification with copy. Familiarity with LC subject headings and current sources of verification of same, i.e., LCSAF, LC Subject Cataloging Manual. Knowledge of LCAF authority structure to search, identify, verify, and export authority records and to resolve discrepancies as appropriate. Knowledge of MARC21 Format for Holdings Data, Holdings Statements for Bibliographic Items (ANSI/NISO Z39.71) and local holdings procedures. Working knowledge of a major bibliographic utility’s computer applications (e.g. OCLC Connexion) to implement efficient cataloging work flows and procedures and resolve problems.

Physical Requirements
Position requires lifting materials weighing up to 15 pounds; maneuvering loaded book trucks weighing 300-700 pounds; reaching or bending for materials on shelves from 5 inches to 85 inches high.
