This External position is for UCD/UCDHS employees and the general public. Applications from the general public and UCD/UCDHS employees will be considered simultaneously.The General Library consists of the Peter J. Shields Library, the Carlson Health Sciences Library and the Physical Sciences & Engineering Library in Davis, and the Medical Center Library in Sacramento. The Carlson Health Sciences Library serves faculty, staff and students in the School of Medicine, School of Veterinary Medicine and various graduate groups and research activities in the health sciences.

Responsibilities
This position is one of two that functions as the Night and Weekend Lead and is responsible for representing the University Library to all Carlson Health Sciences Library (CHSL) patrons on evenings, weekends and holidays. Interprets and enforces library policies and procedures, providing and overseeing service at the circulation/reserves desk and providing basic reference assistance. Depending upon the shift, this position is responsible for opening and closing the library and overall security of the building (approximately 37,600 sq. ft.) and its collection. The library is open 40 hours per week on evenings and weekends during which one of the two incumbents is in charge of the facility during a period when reference librarians or other library career staff are not scheduled.

Requirements
Demonstrated experience in a library setting with the ability to interpret general library policies, procedures and practices; ability to exercise independent judgment, discretion, and creativity to make appropriate decisions. Skills to navigate online systems, catalogs, and other databases essential to circulation functions: knowledge of and/or experience with automated Library systems; understanding of bibliographic and serials records to retrieve online and print records, and to verify citations using online print resources. Interpersonal and communication skills to interact in person and via telecommunication with a wide variety of people, with an emphasis on providing good customer service. Ability to effectively explain complex policies; and ability to remain calm and exercise tact and diplomacy at all times. Ability to exercise good judgment in responding to emergencies and unusual situations, in granting or refusing exceptions to existing policy, in maki ng sound decisions, and in making appropriate referrals. Ability to function effectively as a work leader, to train, direct, evaluate, and motivate staff; to establish priorities, and organize a fluctuating workload for self and others to meet workload requirements. Experience working in a networked operating system. Skill in the use of Microsoft Office suite software, email and the internet. Skills to operate and perform simple maintenance for various types of equipment, including computer terminals, CD-ROM stations, photocopiers, fax machines, etc. Writing skills to compose correspondence, instructions, and desk manuals.

Special Conditions of Employment
Hours to be covered by the position typically include Monday-Thursday 4-10pm, Friday 1-6 pm, Saturday 8:30am-6pm, and Sunday 9:30am-6pm; this schedule is subject to change during interse ssions and holidays. Must be available to attend staff meetings during daytime hours and to substitute for other night and weekend staff on short notice. Must be able to occasionally work over 50% time and adjust work schedule to accommodate vacation/sick leave of others. Rotate night, weekend, and holiday hours as necessary. No smoking, eating, or drinking in work area.

Physical Requirements
Read standard and computer print, handwritten requests and CRT screens. Frequent use of office equipment including but not limited to computers, keyboards, laser scanners, image scanners, and photocopiers. Lift books weighing up to ten pounds and pass them across a 39" high counter; push loaded book trucks weighing up to 400 pounds; transport books by elevator; and shelve and retrieve books in stacks from 5" to 84" high in 32" to 34" wide aisles.
