This External position is for UCD/UCDHS employees and the general public. Applications from the general public and UCD/UCDHS employees will be considered simultaneously.

ONE POSITION IS STILL AVAILABLE. The General Library consists of the Peter J. Shields Library, the Carlson Health Sciences Library and the Physical Sciences & Engineering Library in Davis, and the Blaisdell Medical Library in Sacramento. The UC Davis Blaisdell Medical Library serves faculty, staff and the School of Medicine students and various graduate and research groups in the health sciences. The Library is open 40 hours per week on evenings and weekends in which two of five Night & Weekend Assistants share the responsibilities when no other library career staff is scheduled.

Responsibilities

This position is responsible for representing the University Library to all UC Davis Blaisdell Medical Library (BML) patrons on evenings, weekends and holidays, and for interpreting and enforcing unit, department, and library policies and procedures, and overseeing all circulation related services. Responsible for opening and closing BML; providing and overseeing services at circulation and overall security of the library (approximately 14,000 sq ft) and its collection. Duties also include shelving of materials, basic reference assistance and assisting the Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery unit.

Requirements

Skills to understand and to effectively implement complex library/ department/ unit policies and procedures which may change daily. Knowledge of, or ability to learn applicable University policies and procedures; knowledge of general Library policies, procedures and practices preferred. Ability to exercise independent judgment, discretion and creativity to make appropriate decisions. Ability to work independently and organize a fluctuating workload, establish priorities, and meet deadlines. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact in person and by telecommunication, with a variety of people including co-workers and patrons. Ability to maintain professionalism and courtesy at all times. Ability to exercise good judgment in responding to emergencies and unusual situations, in granting or refusing exceptions to existing policy, in making sound decisions, and in making appropriate referrals. Skill to navigate online systems, catalogs and other databases essential to Circulation functions; knowledge of and/or experience with automated Library systems; understanding of bibliographic and serial records to retrieve online and print records, and to verify citations using online print resources Skills to operate various types of equipment, including, but not limited to, computer terminals, photocopy equipment, fax machine, and computer and typewriter keyboards.

Special Conditions of Employment
This position is a critical position and subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history and identity check. Hours to be covered by the position typically include Monday-Thursday 4-10pm, Saturday 9am-6pm, and Sunday 10am-8pm. Must be able to work at least one weekend shift per week of not less than 5 hours. Must be able to occasionally work over 50% time and adjust work schedule to accommodate absences of others. Rotate night, weekend, and holiday hours as necessary. No eating in public areas of the Library; no smoking in building. UCDHS identification badge to be worn at all times.

Physical Requirements
Interpret penciled annotations and computer printouts; read CRT screens and micro images displayed on reader screen. Print legibly in small spaces. Operate keyboard equipment and handle uneven pieces of paper/card stock. Reach and retrieve materials from shelves 5' to 82' high and in aisles 42' wide. Lift books weighing up to 15 pounds; maneuver loaded book trucks weighing up to 400 pounds. Must be able to work for extended periods of time (+/- 2 hours) shelving/retrieving books in stacks.
