Library Services Specialist, Archivist for Special Collection - Sacramento Public Library

About the Position:
The Sacramento Public Library is seeking self directed candidates with excellent project management skills for a new position: Library Services Specialist, Archivist for Special Collections supporting the Sacramento Room. The position manages the archives and special collections of the Sacramento Room including acquisitions, collection maintenance, reference and outreach. Under the direction of a Library Supervisor III, this position will plan and implement library digital projects and initiatives and maintain print and digital archives. The successful candidate must be skilled in records organization, preservation of paper and electronic records, and able to work both independently and collaboratively.

Additionally, responsibilities include providing reference services; providing access to the collections for researchers and the general public; exhibition of collection materials; assistance with the cultivation and stewardship of major donors; outreach and marketing. This position oversees one (1) Library Technician.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Masters Degree in Library and Information Science (preferred), History or related field, including archival coursework and practicum (highly desired).
  • Working knowledge of standard archival practice and emerging digital formats and standards.

The Sacramento Public Library Authority is the fourth largest library system in California serving the public in the City and County of Sacramento and five surrounding cities. The Sacramento Public Library operates 27 libraries, which includes a Central Library in downtown Sacramento. The Library has over 300 staff members, a collection of 2M volumes, and a budget of $35M. More than 500,000 residents have a library card and over 7M items are circulated annually.

The Sacramento Room - the 'Jewel in the Crown' of Sacramento's Central Library - is an apt setting for the Sacramento Public Library's Special Collections. The collections include rare books, maps and photographs of Sacramento city and county history; books by local authors; California profiles; and fine press and book arts. More than 21,000 carefully-chosen printed items are available to researchers, teachers, students, writers, policy makers and others.

Selection Process:
The selection process will include a review of the application, resume, cover letter and responses to the supplemental questions. The most qualified candidates will be invited to attend an oral interview. The examination may include, but is not limited to, the essential knowledge skills and abilities listed. Interviews may be conducted via teleconference for candidates from long distances. The application process is also part of the examination process.
